Building with AI

How I Built a Full SaaS App in Lovable for 357 Credits ($95)

I built Hey Karrot, a full production SaaS app, in Lovable for 357 build credits (~$95) instead of a $15K to $30K agency quote. Here's the exact breakdown.

The agency quote for an app like this: $15,000 to $30,000. I built it in 36 hours, from idea to published, for about $95 in Lovable credits.

The app is karrot, the marketing checklist for app builders. You built the app. Marketing is the part nobody taught you. karrot turns the flood of growth advice into one clear checklist.

It made a category Top 5 in Lovable’s SheBuilds competition. Here’s exactly what it cost in Lovable credits, what those credits built, and how to spend fewer on your own app. If you want to build yours with guidance, here’s where I teach this.

How much does it cost to build an app in Lovable?

karrot cost 357 build credits, roughly $90 to $100. On top of those, hosting and the database used 15.5 run credits, and 9.17 of those were free.

Lovable credits cost What it covered Amount
Build credits Building the app with Lovable 357
Of which chat Talking through the project without changing code 3.88
Run credits Hosting and the database (Lovable Cloud) 15.5, of which 9.17 free
In money The 357 build credits About $90 to $100

Lovable uses one credit balance for building, chatting, hosting and the built-in backend. Build and chat usage show up together as build credits. Hosting, the database, AI features and connectors show up as run credits.

What did 357 Lovable credits build?

357 credits built 8 production systems, not a prototype:

  1. Public site and interactive walkthrough for new visitors
  2. Checklist engine: 15 areas, 300+ checks, list and board views, weekly results
  3. In-app AI coach with custom rules and usage limits
  4. Full admin portal: signups, builders, billing, content and settings
  5. Paddle payments and subscriptions
  6. Judge demo accounts with demo-only privacy
  7. An MCP server, so outside AI tools connect to karrot
  8. SEO setup: llms.txt and Google Search Console

Each one runs in production. None of it is a mock-up.

How many Lovable credits does a production SaaS app take?

There’s no fixed number, because scope and prompting decide it. For karrot, I asked Lovable for its own verdict on the build: “For an app of this depth, 357 build credits is on the low-to-average side, very efficient.”

My takeaway: the number of systems matters less than how you ask for them. A clear plan, built in pieces, costs less than one big prompt you keep fixing.

The app was also small where it counts. One clear job: give app builders a marketing checklist. Everything else, from the coach to the admin portal, serves that job. This is Simple, Lovable, Complete in practice: a narrow promise, but the user gets the whole result.

How do you use fewer Lovable credits?

Spend credits on building, not on fixing. These 5 habits come from Lovable’s own best-practice guide and from how I scope every app:

  1. Plan before you build. For anything bigger than a tweak, switch to Plan mode. Lovable inspects your project, asks questions and proposes a plan you edit before any code is written.
  2. Talk it through in Chat mode. Chat mode never changes your code, and each message typically costs a fraction of a credit. My chat usage for all of karrot was 3.88 credits.
  3. Add features one at a time. Payments, reminders and extra views come later. Lovable’s guide puts it plainly: later is cheaper than a first prompt asking for everything at once.
  4. Ask for empty, loading and error states up front. Real apps spend a lot of time empty, loading or failing. Asking early saves a round of fixes.
  5. Stop retrying failed fixes. If “Try to fix” hasn’t solved an error after a couple of attempts, move to Plan mode and ask Lovable to find the root cause first.

Paste the planning prompt below into Lovable’s Plan mode before your first build prompt.

Lovable vs a dev agency: what’s the real cost difference?

The money difference is huge. The work difference is real too, so here’s both sides.

Lovable (karrot) Development agency
Cost About $95 in build credits A $15,000 to $30,000 quote
Time 36 hours, idea to published Not quoted
Product decisions Yours Shared with the agency
Testing and fixes Yours The agency’s job
Changes after launch You prompt them yourself A new quote or a retainer

Lovable doesn’t replace thinking. If you’d rather have someone build it with you, there’s a middle option: a fractional vibe coder. You decide what to build, in what order, and what to cut. I’ve written about what belongs in a first version, because this decision saves more credits than any prompt trick.

And before any of it, check people want it. Validating your idea costs nothing in credits.

Is a Lovable app ready for paying users?

Yes. karrot takes real payments through Paddle, with subscriptions, an admin portal for billing, and demo accounts with their own privacy rules for the competition judges.

Production-ready still means you test it. Run every payment path yourself, including a cancelled subscription. Check what happens when someone enters something unexpected. And if your app stores personal data you’re unsure about, have someone who knows code review those parts.

For other tools beyond Lovable, see my vibe coding tools guide. For the whole path from idea to first users, read how to build an app as a non-technical founder.

Credit figures from karrot’s Lovable usage details. Lovable’s credit rules checked on Lovable’s own docs on 26 October 2026.

Plan your Lovable build before spending credits

Here's my app idea: [describe it in a few sentences]
Who it's for: [one kind of person]
The one job it does: [the core result]

Before writing any code, break this into buildable pieces. List them in the order to build, starting with the smallest version where the core job works. For each piece, say what it needs (pages, data, sign-in, payments) and what to leave for later.

Include empty, loading and error states for each screen. Ask me any question you need answered first. Don't build anything yet.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build a full SaaS app in Lovable?

Mine cost 357 build credits, roughly $90 to $100, plus 15.5 run credits for hosting and the database, of which 9.17 were free. The app has 8 production systems, from payments to an admin portal. Your cost depends on scope, and how you prompt changes it more than the app's size.

How many Lovable credits does it take to build a production app?

karrot took 357 build credits, and Lovable called it on the low-to-average side for an app of its depth. A smaller app with one core job takes fewer. Planning before you build is the biggest lever on the number.

How do you use fewer credits in Lovable without breaking your app?

Plan before you build, and add features one at a time. Lovable's own docs recommend Plan mode for anything bigger than a tweak, and Chat mode messages cost a fraction of a credit because they don't change code. When a fix fails twice, stop retrying and ask Lovable to find the root cause first.

How does building in Lovable compare to hiring a development agency?

In money, about $95 against a $15,000 to $30,000 agency quote. In time, 36 hours from idea to published. The trade-off: with Lovable, the product decisions, testing and fixes are yours.

Is a Lovable app ready for real paying users or just prototypes?

A Lovable app takes real payments. karrot runs Paddle payments and subscriptions, an admin portal for billing, and demo accounts with their own privacy rules. Test every payment path yourself before launch, and have personal data and payments reviewed if you're unsure.
